Mike Nelson - A Brief Introduction

I studied at Cumbria College of Art & Design from 1989-1991 going on to Leeds Metropolitan University in 1992. I graduated in 1995 with first class BA Honours in Fine Art, specialising in sculpture. In the same year I was awarded runner up in the Royal Society of British Sculptors Student Award.

I worked as an Art and Design Technician for six years at Giggleswick School in North Yorkshire before moving to Kendal in 2002 to work at Kendal College as an Art & Design technician. Through my experience I have furthered my skills and understanding in a wide range of techniques and applications. I continue to work at the college on a part-time basis in both a technical and lecturing capacity.

I began making gift / presentation boxes in my student days when money was limited. I found I could transform a very modest gift into something special with a bit of time spent on the way it was presented and packaged. I used a variety of materials including wood, metal, paper and string to create items that became valued keep sakes.

I hope to bring my work to a wider audience with the emphasis on maintaining high quality & unique pieces.
